Caregiving brings a unique set of challenges to those who assume the responsibility of others. In this presentation, learn the significant effects this work has on caregivers and those within their circle. By gaining an understanding of the dynamics related to caregiving, we can learn how to better support the multi-dimensional framework of our communities and organizations. Issues such as dual relationships, “invisible” diseases such as dementia, and differences in caregiving across the spectrum of life will be discussed.

2 clinical CEUs will be awarded to all who attend.

Learning Objectives:

1. Outline the latest demographic information related to caregiving

2. Describe effects caregiving has on the individual’s health and well-being

3. Identify signs and symptoms of compassion fatigue

4. Utilize practice skills to better acknowledge the effects of caregiving and assist clients towards caregiver mastery.

Presenters:

Marcy Croffy, LCSW, has more than 30 years’ experience as a social worker and facilitator for change within individuals and organizations in professional and volunteer systems. She has worked with diverse populations in rural community mental health, government and non-profit settings across the United States. She is skilled at networking and collaboration and interfaces with various levels of agency personnel to provide clients improved access to services. In her current position at Boise VAMC Caregiver Support Program, Marcy engages caregivers in education/training on factors contributing to caregiver burnout and how to better manage resultant stress.

Stacey Lewis, LCSW, has been a social worker for 23 years. She currently works in the Caregiver Support Program at the Boise VA Medical Center. Her professional experience also includes working in inpatient and outpatient medical settings and with adults who have severe and persistent mental illness. Through her professional experience, Stacey has been provided with opportunities to assist individuals and their caregivers. In her personal life, Stacey is a wife and mother to three sons. When one of her sons was born with liver disease, she found herself on a health care journey which provided her with a unique perspective of what it means to be a caregiver and the impact caregiving has on the individuals who provide care.
