We will not be offering any discounted parking for this event but you can park for free in Julia Davis park near the zoo and walk over the bridge to campus - or you can pay for parking in the Brady garage.

Presentation Description: The DSM is commonly described at the “Bible” of mental health treatment.
The question is...of what utility does it have for the social work clinical in the daily practice of treating clients and what are its limitations?
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the concept of mental illness/impairment and identify the role of sociocultural context in the designation of mental health disorders and formal mental health diagnosis
2. Outline the historical overview of the mental health classification system culminating in the current use of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR).
3. Describe the use of the DSM-5-TR in clinical practice and identify pros/cons of manualized processes in the provision of standardized mental health treatment.
4. Identify the importance of clinical judgment, cultural competency, and differential diagnosis in considering mental health impairment.
More about our Presenters: Dr. Chonody is the MSW Program Coordinator at Boise State University since 2019 having been a professor since 2017. She has more than 10 years clinical practice experience and is a social work supervisor for new clinicians. She has taught at various other universities both here and in Australia.
Scott Chyna has taught at BSU College of Social Work since 2017. He previously taught at the University of Illinois, Jane Addams College of Social Work where he also coordinated field practicum learning for graduate students. Scott has over 25 years of direct clinical practice experience in a variety of settings including outpatient and inpatient mental health treatment in addition to mental health program development and management.
Charles S Pohl has been in training and practice in mental health since 1971 retiring from practice at the Boise VA Medical Center in 2020 after over 20 years in outpatient mental health and SUD treatment. Since then he has been engaged in training psychiatric residents in psychotherapy and group work. He currently provides consultation, supervision to social workers, and non-medical psychotherapy to mental health professionals as well has being a member of the Board of the ISCSW for the past three years and a founding member in 1993.
